Here is the second edition in what might turn into a regular series of posts singing the praises of food I've eaten, and possibly a few drinks I've imbibed. The first edition can be found here.
Stinking Bishop, available at good cheesemongers
Stinking bishop is a rather pungent washed rind cheese. The name is actually nothing to do with the smell, but comes from the name of the stinking bishop pear used to make the perry that the cheese is then washed in. Cheese rinsed in booze. Mmmm. It does stink though, so the name is apt. The flavour of the cheese rather belies the strong odour, as it's actually quite mellow and fruity. It also has a very smooth, shiny, spreadable texture that reminds me of processed cheese spread. I like to think of it as a sort of turbo dairylea (in a good way).
It's very good when left at room temperature to ooze for a while, then scooped up with some plain oatcakes. I also ate some stuffed in pancakes, which was a rather decadent pancake day treat. I bought mine from the Westmorland Farm Shop services (Tebay) on the M6. It seems to be fairly widely available so you can probably find it in a good cheesemonger.
Wilsons Pies, Crossgates, Armley & Morley
Wilsons of Crossgates are butchers renowned for their pork pies. I first fell in love with them while living in the Crossgates area some years ago. The Crossgates centre is pie heaven. Unless things have changed there are about 17 assorted bakeries and butchers within a 200 yard radius.
In recent years Wilson's seem to have expanded the pie side of the business. Their other shops in Armley and Morley focus on the pastries rather than the meat, and they also have a mobile pie van that can be found at all Leeds Rhinos home games.
The pies are not what I'd describe as a gourmet product, but they are bloody lovely. They're salty, porky, a bit greasy, have a nice, crisp crust, and are just delicious. Small pork pies are 95p each. I suggest you go buy one, or maybe several. Preferably several.
The Gentleman's Relish (Patum Peperium), widely available
The fish version of marmite. As a dedicated lover of all things fishy (thai fish sauce, asian shrimp pastes, anchovies etc etc) what's not to like. It's a simple concoction of anchovies, butter and seasoning of some sort ground into a fine paste. Stick to the recommendation on the tub and eat it spread sparingly on hot, buttered toast. I prefer it on granary. Yum.
Bundaberg Ginger Beer, available in deli's, posh sandwich shops, etc.
I like this. It's not gingery enough but it has a rather lovely aftertaste of toffee and is more refreshing than the colossal sugar content would suggest. Try as an alternative to Irn-Bru when feeling delicate! Probably not worth importing from Australia though... Fentimans is better and comes from Newcastle.

Ngerjainnya 2 hari. Kemarin pagi sebelum berangkat ke kantor aku buat kulit pienya dulu, panggang setengah matang. Malam sepulang kantor dan belanja, aku persiapkan isian quiche dan potong potong keju kubusnya.
Setelah menemani Cinta belajar untuk UTS Agama Kristen, aku tidur sebentar. Jam 2:30 tadi pagi bangun, bikin Cheesy cupcake, sambil nunggu matang, aku buat cream untuk topping dan mengisi Mushroom Quichenya. Quiche masuk oven, aku mulai bikin Puding Tape Ketan.
Wawawawa....aku bahagia...hihihi..
Thanks ya, Ladies...

Bikinnya baru tadi pagi jam 4.
Jam 5 masuk oven. Aku tinggal masak dulu, trus mbangunin dan nyiapin Cinta berangkat sekolah.
Jam 6:30 matang, disentor fan dan AC biar cepet adem :) Cinta berangkat sekolah, aku nyetak tulisannya, nyuci buah dan bikin whipped cream... Jam 7:15, masih agak agak hangat dikit mulai menghias...

Ile de France Camembert: The Cheese for Cheese Lovers
Camembert, with its strong aroma, is not a cheese to be taken lightly. This cheese first originated in Normandy and is made from cow's milk and its surface ripened usually for at least three weeks.
Since Ile de France just came out with a new recipe for their camembert cheese, they offered me a sample for review. It came to my doorstep via overnight delivery.
Now, keep in mind that this, as any other cheese, should be eaten at room temperature, where the camembert will be wonderfully runny. Since I like taking cross section shots I did this one before it's at room temperature and ready to eat:
It should be even runnier than this:

The camembert may look like brie, and is as smooth and creamy, but a simple sniff will tell you the difference. A strong nutty and musky aroma; no, this is no simple brie. The flavor is more intense as well: earthier and nuttier
So, I decided to do a recipe with the camembert this time around *gasp*. Don't be too surprised though, as I'm no great cook I'm doing a grilled camembert sandwich!

Englisth cupcake & Mushroom Quiche Meita

Snack box pesanan Mendi
1. Fruity Japanese cheese cake, aku pakai alfoil
2. Pudding Almond dengan fruit cocktail
3. Mushroom quiche (lupa photo close up :D)
Fruitful Japanese Cheese Cake
Gak papa, next time kita masih bisa belajar bareng ya, In.

Setelah acara Pleks gathering Jumat malam, aku langsung siapkan bahan trus istirahat bentar. Hatiku sempat dag dig dug, kuatir kalau hujannya makin deras. Puji Tuhan sekitar jam 4:30 hujan berhenti.
Jam 5:15 yang tugas antar kue datang berdua naik motor. Cake langsung dibawa dan diantar ke Sepanjang, which is jauhhhhhhh banget kalau dari Pondok Chandra..hehehe...tp karena masih pagi, jalanan nggak rame jadi bisa lancar sampai di tempat. Trus jam 6:54 Venny sms, dia malah kaget waktu Nino & Yose mengucapkan terimakasih, soalnya Venny nggak nyangka cakenya dikirim hari Sabtu itu...hihihi....mau ngasih kejutan malah terkejut sendiri ya, Ven..
Pasadena Wine Bar Renaissance? Part 2: Wine Detective
I passed by Wine Detective while they were still undergoing construction on one of my walks around Pasadena months ago. I didn't know when they would open but then I recently received an invitation from one of the co-owners, Lev, to check the place out.
Since this wine bar is just a few blocks away from Caltech (and my apartment) and thus an easy walk, I was more than happy to try it out for myself. A wine bar opening up within a stone's throw from Caltech can only be a good thing!
Wine Detective employs the Enomatic wine dispenser system, where the customer inserts a smartcard into the machine, chooses the wine they want, presses a button and receives a 1 oz pour.
The 1 oz pours (usually priced between $2-4) let you try a lot more wines than you would normally have, but it is cheaper if you opt for a glass. You can also get a bottle here and pay retail price + corkage fee.
The white wines are of course chilled and each pour is precisely controlled.
The wines here are all chosen by the four owners - and the four of them have to agree on the wines, which is probably quite an ordeal given people's differing palate. But, hey, I won't complain if I have to taste wine for work :P
Here you can also find some wines that you can't get at retail stores or are harder to find including Turley Howell Mountain Zinfandel and a selection of Charles Smith's wines.
While Wine Detective is not a restaurant, they do serve cheese plates, charcuterie, and some pintxos.
We got a cheese plate to share. A selection of three cheeses run $11.00.
Each cheese was served with the appropriate condiments. we got the verdecapra (a blue cheese from Italy), Roccolo (Cow’s Cheese from Italy), and a goat cheese that I can't remember. The blue cheese was pretty amazing, do try it sometime.
Duck Trio (duck pate, duck prosciutto, duck salami) - $17
A plate worth getting, we loved all three but I loved the pate most of all, it was smooth and rich in flavor. I probably ate more than my share that night. I should also note that the bread that came with this and the cheese plate was quite good and went well with the cheese and charcuterie.
To soak up all that wine, LA&OC Foodie and I also decided to get some pintxos to share. A selection of 3 pintxos is also $11 and we chose: Pate (Duck Pate, Cucumber, Piquillo Pepper), Mozzarella
(Buffalo Mozzarella, Oven Roasted Tomatoes, Basil), and Serrano (Serrano Ham, Manchego Cheese, Oven Roasted Tomatoes).
These are pretty basic bites that work well with wines. I thought the Serrano could've used something extra since it was a bit dry for my taste, but again, I loved the pate.
Not only could I walk home after drinking wine, they also offer a 10% discount for those with Caltech or JPL id!
Also, for happy hour (M-F, 4-7pm) they are offering $5 glass of house wine and 25% off all food items.
