Terimakasih pesanannya ya, Mak, akhirnya tahu kan rasanya Western Kebabku ;p

Peeping Sausages & Western Kebab pesanan Deviana

Peeping Sausages Deviana

Pesanan snack pagi ini. Dipesan oleh Deviana. Jenisnya Western Kebab dan Peeping Sausages.. :).

Snack Meeting CA

1pudding

Pesanan snack untuk meeting CA hari ini. Western Kebab, Puding Coklat dan Smoked Beef Risoles.

1kebab

Tadi malam, setelah ngadon kulit risoles, aku diamkan dulu sambil ngeloni Cinta. Tapi aku ikut ketiduran.

Makasih orderannya ya, Bune...

Al-Safa, Rusholme, Manchester

The curry mile is a bit of a misnomer these days. A cursory glance up and down the Wilmslow Road in Rusholme will tell you that a rather significant minority (if not the majority) of the eateries on the strip are now from the Middle East rather than the Indian subcontinent. If the restaurant names are to be believed then I spotted Lebanese, Iranian, Palestinian, Iraqi, Egyptian, Afghan and Syrian places in a five minute wander. This is probably a good thing as rumour has it that most of the curry houses are actually a bit rubbish.

One of these Middle Eastern places is where I was headed, as I fancied a quality kebab. Following the recommendations of Flavours of Manchester I ended up in Al-Safa and ordered a single Kobeda (which I think are Iranian kebabs). As an aside, if you like curry, kebabs, beer, Manchester or any combination of those things than I strongly recommend you read Flavours of Manchester. I haven't been let down yet by any of their recommendations.

When the kebab arrived I was rather glad I hadn't ordered the double (which I nearly had) as the single was huge and far better looking in real life than the photo's on the menu display. The bread was light and crisp. The salad was fresh, varied and good quality, far from the limp afterthought it often is on kebabs. The meat itself was nicely chargrilled but of slightly dubious quality (ok lamb taste but a bit processed), and the accompanying chilli sauce was fiery.

At £3.50 it was a bargain. Great bread, great salad, great sauce. Meat not quite so great but what do you expect at those prices.

Snack Meeting orderan Procurement

Fruit Pie

Apple Tarlet

Rolled Sausages

Muffin Cornet Keju

Salad buah sebelum diberi strawberry...agak agak pucet ya?

Fruit Salad

Jadi aku tambahkan strawberry sebagai pemanis..

Fruit Salad

Macaroni Schotel

Kebab

Jujur, capeeee banget..hihih..masih kebawa mood liburan sih, jadi masih kurang semangat..semalam sambil nungguin oven, sampai ketiduran berkali kali...untuk bunyi timerku lumayan shocking, jadi nggak sampai bablas..

Macaroni Schotel

Makasih ordernya ya, Bu.. :)

Feng Mao: Mutton, Cumin, Fire.

Feng Mao had been on my to-try list ever since I read about their mutton kebab in cumin galore on FoodGPS and LA Weekly.

Feng Mao is labeled as a Korean-Chinese cuisine, is located in K-town with Korean signage and menu, but the owner Jing Cu Hwa and her husband are actually from China. They hail from Jilin province in Northern China, which borders Korea and explains the heavy Korean influence (technically it also borders Russia, too).

The full name of the restaurant is Feng Mao Mutton Kebab, so obviously we have to get the mutton kebabs.
The meat is covered with spices, including chili powder and cumin. This is a Northern Chinese dish after all, so you can actually find similar lamb kebabs at various Mongolian style hot pot places, like Happy Sheep, but those don't hold a candle to Feng Mao's tender and succulent mutton skewers. For one thing, mutton > lamb!

Just like any other Korean restaurants, they serve pretty typical banchans here, but it also included a typical Chinese one: boiled peanuts!
We love our boiled peanuts.

We also ordered the beef skewers, and while they're also pretty good, the mutton was much better as they were more tender and had a stronger flavor.

An order of quail will get you a whole butterflied quail.
All the skewers are grill-it-yourself on the charcoal grill they provide on each table (though they'll come by and check to see if you're messing up :P).

There's one more thing to note before you eat your grilled skewers. The heap of cumin-dominated spice on that little plate next to each one of you.
Oh, you know what to do ...

Feng Mao also has a list of cooked dishes, though I didn't try any, along with skewers of mutton kidney and bull penis. Yes, that's right. The adventurous might want those. For me that night, though, although I at first wanted to try the other skewers like beef and quail and enjoyed them, I mainly kept thinking: "man, those mutton kebabs were good. I should've just gotten more mutton kebabs."
